Education offices
A Local Government Education Authority in every one of the 44 local government areas, six Zonal Education Offices, eight board headquarters and the Ministry itself at the Audu Bako Secretariat. Any of them can take an application, answer a question about a school and record a complaint.
Which office you actually need
Most business with the Ministry begins and ends at the Local Government Education Authority office for the area where the school sits. The LGEA holds the school file, pays the teachers posted to it, receives the census return, forwards examination entries and takes complaints about anything that happens inside a classroom. If you are a parent, a pupil or a head teacher, the LGEA is almost always the right first call.
Six Zonal Education Offices — at Bichi, Gaya, Rano, Wudil and in the Kano Central and Kano South zones — sit between the LGEAs and the boards. A zone supervises the LGEAs beneath it, runs quality-assurance inspection teams, coordinates examination centres and settles anything an LGEA cannot. A matter is escalated to a zone when the LGEA has had it for ten working days without a decision.
A small number of things create or change a legal status and are dealt with only at the responsible board headquarters: a new private-school approval or a change of proprietorship at the Private and Voluntary Institute, the registration of a Tsangaya or Islamiyyah school at KSQISMB, a senior-secondary placement appeal at KSSMB, a technical-college admission at STSB. The Ministry headquarters handles policy, the examination series it administers itself, teacher licensing and anything escalated from a board.
No office of the Ministry or of any board takes cash. Every charge on this site — the school approval fee, an examination entry fee for a private candidate, a certificate replacement — is paid against a reference through a bank, a transfer, USSD or the portal, and produces an electronic acknowledgement. An officer who asks you for money in an envelope is committing an offence; report it.

The Ministry does not expect a parent to know the structure. Start anywhere and the matter will be routed — but this is the ladder, and you may use it yourself.
The school
The head teacher or principal first. Most matters — a class placement, a missing textbook, a mark queried, a uniform — are settled here within a week.
The Local Government Education Authority
The Education Secretary for the area where the school sits, if the school has had it for five working days without a decision, or if the complaint concerns the head teacher.
The Zonal Education Office
After ten working days at the LGEA. The zone supervises the LGEAs, holds the inspection teams and can direct a school to act.
The board
SUBEB, KSSMB, STSB, KSQISMB or the Private and Voluntary Institute, according to who manages the school. The board employs the staff and holds the approval.
The Ministry
The directorate that owns the subject, and finally the Permanent Secretary. Anything alleging the conduct of an officer goes straight here and skips the ladder.
Before you travel to an office
Almost everything an LGEA office does can also be done online — admission, transfer, a result lookup, a scholarship application, a textbook requisition, a complaint. Travelling is worth it when you need a document scanned onto a file, a signature witnessed, or an officer sitting beside you while you complete a form. That help is free.
Bring the school code if you have it, the pupil's admission number and a valid means of identification. Offices are busiest in the first fortnight of a term and in the week examination entries close; the middle weeks of a term are consistently quieter.
No office of the Ministry collects cash
Basic education in Kano State is free. No public school, LGEA, zone or board may charge a parent for admission, a transfer certificate, a result slip, a textbook, a place in an examination or a visit to an office.
Where a charge is lawful — a private-school approval, a private candidate's examination entry, the replacement of a lost certificate — it is paid against a reference and produces an electronic acknowledgement. Anyone asking for cash, in an office or at a school gate, should be reported on the hotline or through the feedback form with the name, the office and the date.
